Fei Xiaotong was one of China's pathbreaking sociologists and anthropologists. Educated in London, he came to Yunnan as part of the relocation of Chinese universities to Yunnan during the war against Japan.

One of his important publications at the time was "Earthbound China: A Study of Rural Economy in Yunnan", a study of four Yunnan villages at different stages of development.
