Jiuding Temple sits on the moutainside between Xiaguan and Xiangyun. Its geographic position suggests, it was a temple near the caravan route between Kunming and Dali, marking a place close to the pass between the two places. (The modern expressway, the old railway and the old highway all run very close to it).

There are a number of stone caves nearby that were used as Buddhist shrines.
