Memorial stone for Flying Tigers Airman R.H. Mooney.
In December 1942, U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Robert Mooney, a member of the Flying Tigers, was engaged in aerial combat with Japanese aircraft over Xiangyun and was killed in action. In July 1943, local gentry from the county pooled funds to erect a memorial marker for Lieutenant Mooney on a small hill behind the current highway maintenance section at Qinghua Cave. The marker was made of limestone but was destroyed during the “Cultural Revolution.” A half-damaged marker pole with a relief portrait of Mooney is now kept by the county’s cultural relics management office. In 1992, the Xiangyun County People’s Government rebuilt the memorial marker on the mountain at Qinghua Cave, following the original specifications and style.
