National Day, marking the anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic in 1949, is now one of China's big holidays, surpassed only by Spring Festival in madness.
For about a week, lots of Chinese go travelling and some of the tourist sites throw on special events. Be prepared for difficult transport, particularly on the first and last days of the National Day week. Accommodation in key tourist cities can also be scarce.
