At first sight Jianchuan's county town does not amount to much, but west of the old main road crossing the town from south to north is a very nice old quarter, with many old houses particularly in the 西街 area.
Kiss of Life for an Old Caravan Market
Until the middle of last century, Shaxi was a flourishing village on the caravan road to Tibet. The following decades made it a place that history forgot. Now Shaxi is undergoing an award-winning restoration.
Travel Notes
There is a limited selection of guesthouses in the old town. Bus connections to Dali are frequent. Minibusses to Shaxi leave from in front of the station.
