Pretty Mizhi valley prides itself as the hometown of the Huadeng 花灯之乡, a form of musical play unique to Yunnan, but also a vibrant festival celebrated on the day of the Lantern Festival in early spring.

The valley is also the birthplace of Yin Yi 尹宜, composer of the famous Yunnan folk song 'Rippling Brook' 小河淌水, that most people will have heard travelling in China.

The modern market street is mostly empty, but at the southern end is the historic temple that served as secret meeting point for the communists in the 1940s. From the temple further to the south the concrete road turns into cobblestone and enters Wensheng Street 文盛街, a well preserved stretch of old Yunnan trading town, and a small park around a spring.

From Mizhi to the west a road continues to the temple complex on a dramatic cliff at 太奇山.

Travel Notes
