Mile is Yunnan's Marlboro County: a major tobacco growing and processing region with the giant Honghe cigarette factory on the outskirts of town.
Mile has grown rich on tobacco and, more recently, wine, but the countryside, particularly to the west of the county town remains dominated by poor Yi villages.
