The mountains of Dongchuan are at the heart of the Yunnan copper industry. But despite its legacy of mining and heavy industry, Dongchuan is a very attractive county, as the Red Soil of the Wumeng mountains and the erosion formations of the Xiaojiang river create one of the most spectacular sights in the province. With its history of mining Dongchuan’s population is almost entirely Han, with only a few thousand Yi and Miao in the mountains and some Hui.
The Wumeng Mountains' bright red soil, the buckwheat's yellow and Yunnan's dramatic skies make the region around Dongchuan a paradise for photographers.
